CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Troubled Thoughts

THE DREAM UNFOLDED exactly like it always did. Xavier found himself in a dark room, a layer of smoke or fog rolling across the floor. He knew what awaited him in the darkness, but was helpless to do anything but let it play out again. He drew his sword, feeling its eyes on him, watching him, waiting.

Without warning, the Silver Wraith hurled out of the darkness swinging its twin curved blades at Xavier. He dodged and tried to counterstrike, but the Wraith blocked his blow and continued its assault. He backpedaled away, trying desperately to get some space between them. He looked in vain for a way out, but he knew he would find nothing. He never did. The Wraith stepped in for a double strike and Xavier sprang forward, slashing at its midsection. Just like every time prior, the blade bounced harmlessly off of the Wraith as it continued its assault. It slashed fiercely across, but Xavier managed to duck the attack and countered with a slash of his own. It caught the Wraith right across its mirrored faceplate, shattering it. The Wraith stumbled backwards, its head slumped forward. The first time this happened, Xavier hoped it would be the end. Now he knew better. This dream had replayed in his head too many times for him to be deceived. He stood back, as he always did. The Wraith slowly raised its head, beneath the faceplate Xavier saw the bloody face of Liliya Orloff. He looked on in horror as Liliya’s lids opened to reveal those blood-filled eyes staring at him, full of rage and hate.

Xavier startled himself awake. He was lying in the back of a boat, the brilliant sun shining down on him. He pulled himself up into a seated position and felt the ache in his shoulder. The knife had deflected off of his shoulder blade. It left a gash, but nothing that a first aid kit couldn’t handle. He rubbed his head, the dull ache had returned. He looked up at Martinez. She still had her back to him, driving the boat. That was twice she saved his life in one day. Slowly, he rose to his feet and eased into the seat beside her.

“So, where are we headed?”

Martinez shrugged, “I haven’t got a clue. I checked the map and it looks like there are a few small fishing villages coming up soon. I figured we would stop at one of them and get our bearings.” She glanced over at Xavier, “How are you feeling?”

“Oh, probably as bad as I look. That was quite an ordeal. I’m fortunate you came along when you did.” Xavier paused for a second, choosing his next words carefully.

“Speaking of which, you said you found me on the bounty site. But, why were you looking for me in the first place?”

A cloud seemed to pass over Martinez’s face as she stared out to the horizon. “I don’t know. Ever since you were swept away by the Medical Unit, I guess I’ve wondered if you were okay, if you survived.
